Barista workshops

 

Welcome to the Hija Mia Barista Workshop. With heavy experience in the Australian and New Zealand coffee industry we offer workshops catering to Colombian students heading abroad to study. These workshops are invaluable if you are thinking to obtain employment in the hospitality industry in Australia or New Zealand or for that matter anywhere in the world. Our Barista Workshop is split into 4 levels and are as follows:




Level 1: Australian and New Zealand Coffee Scene.


Interview time in any job can be daunting, especially in a foreign language. We discuss how to look for a job as a barista, what will be expected from you as a barista in the Australian and New Zealand coffee scene. We will discuss in depth the interview process and arm you with a list of local vocabulary that will help you out on the big day.


Level 1: Australian and New Zealand coffee scene.

Duration: 3 hours

Covers: Where to look for employment, what coffees you will need to make in the interview and in which order. Taking, preparing and running orders. Workflow and dynamics of a busy cafe environment. Uniforms. Language differences.




Level 2: Barista Basics.


Knowledge is everything and every barista should understand the fundamentals of the bean, different brewing techniques. We also discuss in depth the Australian and New Zealand coffee menu, how to seek employment, the interview process and what will be expected from you come interview time.


Level 2: Barista Basics.

Duration: 3 hours

Covers: Coffee origins, species and varieties. Farming, harvesting and processing. Roasting, packaging and storing. Coffee equipment orientation. Grind management, dosing pressures and techniques, extraction, milk texturing and pouring. Employment opportunities, interview process and uniforms.




Level 3: Latte Art.

Everyone's favourite, latte art is a prerequisite for all budding baristas. We explain how to stretch milk correctly and to the desired temperature as well as pouring techniques for the perfect latte art. We explain the order in which coffees should be poured in a multiple order scenario. We will also practice splitting milk to help you become a more efficient barista.


Level 3: Latte Art.

Duration: 3 Hours

Covers: Aerating and stretching milk, Correct pouring techniques, multiple order scenarios, splitting milk, milk based coffee diagnosis.



Level 4: Multiple Orders.


Multiple orders is where we put everything from the previous 3 classes into practice. We cannot stress enough of how important it is as a Barista to be able to multitask. Here we are going to put you under pressure with multiple orders of varying coffees. You will be expected to work efficiently and to produce the coffees in the correct order. We will also practice the art of slow coffee as well as cleaning techniques for all equipment.


Level 4: Multiple Orders

Duration: 3 hours

Covers: Multiple orders, multitasking, listening skills, efficiency and speed, slow coffee and cleaning.
